Multicultural Social Studies More now than ever before in the educational history of our nation has multicultural education become important. Due to the ever increasing diversity in our nation, the global economy, and the mobility of our work force, diversity in the classroom is affecting our classrooms. With such a diverse student population teachers must understand that each student will bring his own background knowledge and experience into the learning environment. The task that is presented to teachers is to prepare the students to understand and interact with all the different cultures that are present or that the student may come into contact with, while at the same time teach them content which does not offend a student’s†¦show more content†¦1) Equity pedagogy is the third dimension, which means that teachers use methods and strategies that allow all students to succeed. The fourth dimension is prejudice reduction which is fairly self explanatory. The last di mension is that of empowering school and social culture. I feel that schools must be very careful when trying to adhere to this last dimension. Dr. Banks suggests we look at what does the school staff look like racially. While understanding the need to have a diverse staff in the school, care must be given to the qualifications of the individual teachers. A gifted qualified teacher will be able to teach all students better than a non qualified teacher who just meets the racial qualification. An example of this would be a comment that the former Buffalo, New York school superintendent made when asked about who should replace him. His reply was â€Å"whoever it is should be a minority since 56% of the school’s population is minorities.† My view on this is that his reply should have been the best qualified candidate.
